Your choice for medical imaging
Our Services

At Downsview X-Ray and Ultrasound, we aim to provide all your diagnostic imaging needs. We offer several different modalities in a state of the art facility. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff is here to help get you the imaging study you need quickly and comfortably. Please take a look at the diagnostic modalities below for more information on how they work, what to expect when you come in for an exam, and any specific instructions that should be followed to ensure you get the best quality study.

X-Ray

This modality produces X-rays (which have a very small dose of ionizing radiation) that pass through the body to produce pictures of the body's internal structures. They are often used to help diagnosed fractured bones, look for injury or infection and to locate foreign objects in soft tissue.

Our technologists use the machines to produce the images and the radiologist (your imaging doctor) will interpret the images and provide a report for your referring doctor.

For information on radiation safety and how much dose you can expect for different scans please click the link below to RadiologyInfo.org, a website created by the Radiological Society of North America.

Mammography

This modality uses a low-dose X-ray system to see inside the breasts. A mammography exam, called a mammogram, helps in early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases in women. The radiologist (your imaging doctor) will interpret the images and provide a report for your referring doctor.

Mammograms are an integral part of breast screening. We are pleased to announce that we are now active participants in the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP). Details regarding the program can be found lower on this page.

Please click on the button below for specific instructions before coming in for your mammogram.

Bone Densitometry

Bone densitometry, also called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry or DEXA, uses a very small dose of ionizing radiation to produce pictures of the inside of the body (usually the lower spine and hips) to measure bone loss.

It is commonly used to diagnose osteoporosis and to assess an individual’s risk for developing fractures (breaks of the bone). Our BMD program has met accreditation by the OAR BMD Accreditation Program.

The radiologist (your imaging doctor) will interpret the images and provide a report for your referring doctor.

Please click on the button below for specific instructions before coming in for this test.

Ultrasound

This modality uses a transducer or probe to generate sound waves and produce pictures of the body's internal structures. It does not use ionizing radiation, and has no known harmful effects.

Ultrasound is often used to help diagnose unexplained pain, swelling and infection. It may also be used to provide imaging guidance to needle biopsies or to see and evaluate conditions related to blood flow. It's also the preferred imaging method for monitoring a pregnant woman and her unborn child.

The technologist acquires the images at the bedside and the radiologist (your imaging doctor) will interpret the images and provide a report for your referring doctor.

Please click on the button below for specific instructions before coming in for this test.

Echocardiography and Vascular Ultrasound

This modality uses a transducer or probe to generate sound waves as described above, specifically to produce images of the heart, arteries and veins. Our technologists have undergone special training to perform these studies.

The technologist acquires the images at the bedside and the radiologist (your imaging doctor) will interpret the images and provide a report for your referring doctor.

We are pleased to announce our affiliation with the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) as of December 2016!

This program allows eligible women to receive screening mammograms without having to see their referring provider or have a requisition. It was initiated to help expedite the detection and management of breast cancers.

Women are eligible for OBSP if they:

  • are 50 years of age and over

  • have not had a mammogram within the last year

  • have not had breast implants

  • have no significant breast complaints

  • have no previous history of breast cancer

  • have no mammographic and/or ultrasound abnormalities that are being followed

Note: the OBSP is for average risk women.  A High Risk program exists for women 30-69.

Please see below for an information brochure and the link to the OBSP website through Cancer Care Ontario.
